Kuwait has the world’s sixth-largest known oil reserves and hosts some 13,500 American troops.Palghar saw drama before the election with the sitting MLA Amit Ghoda who was- with the Shiv Sena joining hands with the NCP after the Sena denied him a ticket. The squabbling has prevented the assembly from passing basic economic reforms, including a public debt law that would allow the government to borrow money, leading to the depletion of its general reserve fund despite its vast oil wealth. “Kuwaitis really need these two branches of government to work together.” That could mean the dissolution of parliament by royal decree or constitutional decision. Sheikh Meshal has vaguely threatened “forceful measures” if these elections fail to break the gridlock between the appointed Cabinet and the democratically elected assembly. Lawmakers have grilled ministers over alleged corruption and ministers have resigned in exasperation. Since the previous emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, died two years ago, Kuwait’s long-standing political deadlock has worsened. Kuwait has the freest and most active assembly in the Persian Gulf, but political power is still largely concentrated in the hands of the ruling Al Sabah family, which appoints the prime minister and Cabinet, and can dissolve the assembly at any time.Ĭrown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmed Al Jaber, an 82-year-old who has assumed many of the duties of the ailing 85-year-old emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, called Thursday’s elections earlier this year when he dissolved parliament. The new assembly will include 27 new members, around a dozen of whom served in previous assemblies, local media reported. Kuwaiti women have increasingly voiced frustration with parliament’s failure to pass laws protecting women from abuse and so-called honor killings in the conservative society. Two women were also elected, after the last elections in 2020 saw the sole female legislator in the assembly lose her seat. “Those candidates who are willing to make this a strongly polarized issue did well.” She noted that 17 elected lawmakers had signed a widely criticized “values pledge” that calls for gender segregation in Kuwaiti schools and a ban on mixed dance parties. “If those candidates come forth with conservative social positions it will divide those who are pushing for reforms,” said Kristin Smith Diwan, a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. Kuwait’s Islamist opposition accuses the government of graft and mismanagement, frequently grilling ministers over their involvement in the misallocation of public funds.īut experts say such candidates could push back on social reforms and protections of women’s rights and freedoms. Voters appear to have been motivated by growing complaints about official corruption. The results from Thursday’s vote, which will bring 27 new members to the 50-member assembly, were seen as a mandate for change amid a prolonged period of gridlock between the Cabinet, which is appointed by the royal family, and the 50-member assembly, which is democratically elected and more independent than similar bodies across the region. Voters in Kuwait chose to shake up their parliament, sending conservative Islamist figures and two women to the assembly in the Gulf Arab nation’s second election in less than two years, according to results released Friday. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Add to that damage from an entire lifetime of exposures that generate more inflammation, and the body never has a chance to repair.Īcute inflammation can occur at any age, as we know from the toddler with an ear infection or the teenager with a skateboarding injury. When the inflammatory response is sustained from repeated triggers, molecules generated by innate immune cells in response to these SOS signals create collateral damage. Hormones and nerve signals that respond to psychological stress can set off these SOS signals.9 So can air pollution and other characteristics of modern life. It is set off by damage-associated molecular patterns and other SOS signals from living cells that are under duress.8 As such it is often referred to as “sterile” inflammation. While acute inflammation is triggered by molecular patterns both from pathogens and from damages, chronic inflammation is prompted in the absence of infection. The acute and chronic inflammatory responses share some important characteristics and molecular mechanisms, but they also differ in essential ways. These are some of the key biomarkers currently used to track acute inflammation.7 They stimulate the release of other inflammatory mediators, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) from the liver. Pro-inflammatory cytokines-interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), for example-keep the inflammatory response cooking. Some of these messengers amplify inflammation-they’re called pro-inflammatory-and other, anti-inflammatory ones abate it. In this situation, damage-associated molecular patterns, which consist of cellular debris, are released in response to physical or chemical injury.6įollowing activation by these molecular patterns, tissues and immune cells release a host of signaling proteins called cytokines. Acute inflammation can also be triggered by cellular injury. These signatures haven’t changed much over millions of years of evolution, and because humans have evolved in tandem with these organisms, our innate immune cells have developed ways to recognize them. The result is a crucial breakdown in the immune system’s ability to repair damage and restore homeostasis.Īcute inflammation can begin with an infection, when innate immune cells recognize molecular signatures found on the surface of bacteria, fungi, or viruses called pathogen-associated molecular patterns. When that happens, the body’s healing mechanism is transformed into a smoldering fire that creates ongoing harm. Once healing is complete, specific regulating molecules turn off the response.5 Sometimes, though, the response doesn’t switch off, and the result is a chronic systemic inflammatory state. Activity increases sharply in the face of a threat or injury and then resolves when the threat has passed and the damage is repaired. The acute inflammatory response is a time-limited event. The goal is repair and recovery-restoration of the body’s optimal working conditions, a state called homeostasis.4 Inflammation can be acute or chronic, localized or systemic, but it involves a whole host of cells and molecular messengers participating in a complex, choreographed set of interactions. Inflammation occurs when the body’s innate immune system responds to damage or a threat. The body has an ancient and powerful mechanism to heal itself: the inflammatory response. I think the way this show straddles documentary and pure fiction is confusing for viewers who don’t care to actually do the research. But having been through it first hand, I see something troubling around the experience of being conned. I’m not interested in talking about this anymore or in Anna as a person – I’d love to move on. I appreciate people giving voice to it because when it comes from me, it’s easy to dismiss it as words of some ‘bitter ex-friend’. Something real happened here, and if you’re going to cover that, you have to change names or identifying features. But if you’re going to use people’s real names and details, you can’t just choose your own adventure. I think first of all, it strikes me as lazy because there’s this categorical disclaimer as if that gives them licence to do whatever they want. ![]() Is that something that you’ve found difficult? The show, like you say, combines fact with fiction that – when using real people’s stories like your own – can prove problematic. It’s really created a fictional show with little morsels of truth in it that is very deceptive and misleading. I’m immensely relieved I had the opportunity to tell the truth about what happened through the book, especially in light of Inventing Anna, since it diverged so much from the truth of events. Your version of events – as told in your book – clearly differs from the storyline in the show. ![]() ![]() ![]() People move through the set just as the actors do, spurred on by the thrill of discovery.
